FBI Criminal Background Reports (Rapsheet)
An Identity History Summary—often referred to as a criminal history record or a “rap sheet”—is a listing of certain information taken from fingerprint submissions kept by the FBI and related to arrests and, in some instances, federal employment, naturalization, or military service. The U.S. Department of Justice Order 556-73, also known as Departmental Order, establishes rules and regulations for you to obtain a copy of your Identity History Summary for review or proof that one does not exist. For criminal offenses, the Rap Sheet includes the date of arrest, the arrest charge(s), and the arrest disposition(s) if known. When no record is found, a dated “No Arrest Record” stamp, placed on the back of the fingerprint card the individual submitted for the Criminal Record File search, serves as our official reply. Please see fbi.gov for more info. The “National Level” FBI background check is also referred to as:
- Criminal Clearance Certificate or Police Clearance Certificate.
- FBI Criminal Background History Report.
- Criminal History Record Summary.
- Rap Sheet.
- Personal Review or Record Review
- Identity History Summary Check
Note: for a criminal background check at the California DOJ state level, you will need to submit your fingerprints via the live scan digital process. Please see our “Personal Record Review” webpage if you need to obtain a copy of your “California Criminal Clearance Certificate”.
How do I obtain a copy of my FBI Identification Record – Criminal History Report
In order to furnish an individual with a copy of their criminal record, or proof that one does not exist, the individual must be electronically fingerprinted by an authorized FBI Channeler (24 hours reports) or fingerprinted on the FD-258 card by an authorized fingerprint service provider and mail the fingerprint card to the FBI (13-15 weeks). Alive Scan is authorized for both options.
